Résumé: The growing demand for space to accommodate new construction and the expansion of existing facilities has forced the construction industry to build upon soft ground; peat and organice soil represent the extreme form of soft soil. The challenges faced by engineers on road construction over peat and organic soils include limited accessibility, expectations of very large settlement over an extended time period, and possibility of stability problemes. The high compressibility, low shear stregth and high ground water level cause specific problems in relation to desinning and sonstructing on such types of soil. In many peat areas, the availlability of local materials, which are suitable, is primarily the common problem.
