Résumé: An overview of traffic grooming and lambda grooming in multilayer networks is presented. In short-term future, dynamically reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks are expected to serve metropolitan areas, while the transport networks will be statically configured at first and automatically switched later. A slow evolution from circuit switching to packet switching is expected as well, particularly in the access and metropolitan parts of the networks, while the transport part will likely remain circuit-switched.
