ملخص: In this paper, the derivation of the nonlinear strains occurring in thin:walled bars of open cross:section, when subjected to axial, flexural and torsional displacements is reviewed and generalised. The nonlinear expressions for the strains are derived in accordance with beam theory, the influence of shear deformation due to non:uniform bending and torsion being neglected. The new expressions are validated by considering a number of problems of elastic instability, in which the exact form of the nonlinear expressions, is significant.
